A loaded roll-off weighs several tons and all of it rests on two narrow steel runners. Set straight onto a driveway that load concentrates into two lines. On concrete it marks. On asphalt in July it sinks.
So before the can comes off the truck, boards go down. It costs us a few minutes and it is included in the price in every town we serve.
This is the local code standard, not a sales pitch
The City of Savannah writes it into its own dumpster permit. Any container placed on the public right-of-way must have three-quarter-inch plywood under the runners, must be covered when not in use, and must carry red-and-white reflective tape at each corner if it sits next to a roadway.
Savannah only enforces that on city property. We do it on your driveway in Springfield, Rincon, Guyton, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Garden City, Bloomingdale and Richmond Hill too, because the physics do not change at the county line.

Driveway questions
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
It can, if it is set straight down on the concrete. A loaded roll-off puts thousands of pounds onto two narrow steel runners, which can mark concrete and press into asphalt in summer heat. Boards spread that load, which is why we put them under every can.
What do you put under the dumpster?
Wood boards under the runners, placed before the can comes off the truck. The City of Savannah specifies three-quarter-inch plywood under the runners in its own dumpster permit, so this is the local standard rather than an upsell.
Do you charge extra for driveway protection?
No. It is included in the price in every town we serve, whether or not that town requires it.
Can you put a dumpster on asphalt?
Yes, with boards. Asphalt softens in Georgia summer heat and is more prone to indentation than concrete, so it is the surface where the boards matter most.
What about a gravel or dirt driveway?
Usually fine if the ground is firm and dry. Tell us the surface when you book. Boards help on soft ground too, by keeping the runners from sinking in.
Can you avoid the driveway completely?
Sometimes, on a lot with a firm level area off the drive. Street placement is a different matter and the rules vary by town: Savannah requires a permit, Effingham County prohibits it outright on public roadways, and Bloomingdale requires a bond. Check your town page.
